“REPHOTO PORTO” AN ERASMUS WORKSHOP BETWEEN ESAD AND IEU

Made possible by the Erasmus Teaching Mobility Scheme, Visual Communication Design lecturer Gary McLeod visited ESAD in Porto, Portugal to conduct an intensive three-day workshop about “rephotography”.
Working from old photos of Porto city center, students worked on location and in the studio to develop creative responses to visual change in the city, and displayed the results in an exhibition within one of the school’s gallery spaces. In addition, McLeod delivered a guest lecture titled “On Being an Alien: practice-based learning” to ESAD students where he talked about the challenges and benefits of being a foreigner, a main tenet of the Erasmus programs.
For the students at ESAD, it was a chance to learn about new perspectives on photography as well as learn about our department of Visual Communication Design and the experience of being abroad in Turkey. For McLeod, the experience was a wonderful opportunity to work with students of a different cultural background and observe different approaches to teaching, both of which will help him to help the students at IEU. Furthermore, the workshop also paved the way for possible future collaborations between the students of ESAD and Izmir University of Economics.
A big thank you is necessary to all the students and staff at ESAD who made the workshop an exciting one, as well as Sérgio Correia, who helped to coordinate and push the students.
