'Wish Tree' and 'Water Drop' brought awards
Nurdan Ahsen Fıçıcı and Gözde Ağca, graduates of İzmir University of Economics (IUE) Textile and Fashion Design Department, won the awards in the 12th Wedding Dress Design Competition this year. In the competition held as part of the 'IF Wedding Fashion-İzmir Wedding Dress, Suit and Evening Wear Fair', Fıçıcı from IUE won the first place with his design called 'Wish Tree'. The third place in the competition was Gözde Ağca, who prepared the 'Water drop' wedding dress inspired by the Japanese Shibori technique.
This year, the Wedding Dress Design Competition, which was held with the theme of 'awakening', emphasizing the fashion process changed by the pandemic, witnessed great excitement. In the competition, where there was intense participation from all over Turkey, 15 designs, each more assertive than the other, that qualified for the finals, took place. As a result of the evaluation made by the jury, Nurdan Ahsen Fıçıcı (24) who graduated from IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, Department of Textile and Fashion Design in 2020, reached the first place with her extraordinary design using wool. Gözde Ağca (27), who graduated from the same department in 2017, was awarded the third place with the design she prepared by inspiring from nature. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer presented his award to Fıçıcı; Ağca was presented with the award by Mahmut Özgener, Chairman of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce.
BRANCHES AND SEEDS OF THE WISHING TREE
Nurdan Ahsen Fıçıcı, who continues her master's degree in fashion and textile design at Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti in Italy, said that she completed the design of the wedding dress called "Wish Tree" in a week. Fıçıcı said, “I was inspired by the branches and seeds of the wishing tree for the wedding dress design. I wanted to symbolize energy and hope in my motifs. I preferred wool fabrics, which are rarely used in wedding dresses. During the production phase, I processed the wool with pure silk. There was no waste when I used the wool. I can say that I completed some of the designs in Italy. I was confident, I expected to be first. Of course, being the first in such an important competition is an indescribable feeling. I am very happy, I will never forget this moment for the rest of my life.”
I BENEFIT FROM THE JAPANESE TECHNIQUE
Sharing the details of her wedding dress, which she named 'water drop', Gözde Ağca said, "I was inspired by water droplets and natural patterns while preparing the wedding dress; I reflected these with the Japanese Shibori technique. Shibori technique; A fabric dyeing and patterning method applied by using one or more of different techniques such as compressing, bending, folding the fabric surface. For the wedding dress, I preferred synthetic fabric with a modern approach, different from the traditional technique. I combined compression, boiling, and melting techniques on the fabric surface. I have achieved a harmonious surface design by combining the drop effect with different textures. Transparent like water, full of life and flowing together, the pieces became a part of the 'awakening'. My education reaching the level of proficiency in art and my enthusiasm for experimental approaches made me stand out in the competition. Being a finalist for the second time in this competition was a success that I expected and was proud of. All the designs in the competition were very successful. It was very nice and exciting to compete with strong opponents," he said.
