Notes from the Field: Carly Althoff "Humanitarian Architecture: Resilient Design for Social Good"
The Department of Architecture celebrates the beginning of the Fall semester by launching three thematic seminar series. The first in the series, Notes from the Field, kicked off with Carly Althoff, architect and Managing Director of Journeyman International with her talk "Humanitarian Architecture: Resilient Design for Social Good".
Carly Althoff, Managing Director of humanitarian design organization Journeyman International, talked about the long-term social impact of volunteer-initiated design projects for vulnerable communities in different parts of the world.
Carly Althoff is an architect and Managing Director of Journeyman International, a volunteer-based humanitarian design organization that provides affordable architectural service to support construction efforts across the aid and development sectors in over 45 countries around the world. JI is an American charity with networks of volunteers on every continent and its operational headquarters based in Kigali, Rwanda. It is founded on the belief that sustainable design has the power to fight poverty and mitigate crisis. After starting her architectural career in California, Carly moved to East Africa to establish a network and hub for humanitarian design, aiming to do the same in more regions around the world.
