Works reflecting the pandemic are in Ukraine
Prof. Dr. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of Department of Textile and Fashion Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), and Asst. Prof. Duygu Ebru Öngen Corsini reflected the period that negatively affected human life in the pandemic with art and took part in the exhibition in Ukraine with their works. The "10th International Mini Textile Art Exhibition", with the participation of 160 artists from different countries, featuring Prof. Dr. Adanır’ın ‘Love Birds’ (Aşk Kuşları) and Corsini's works titled "Fragile" and "S.O.S", hosted thousands of art enthusiasts.
Prof. Dr. Adanır from Izmir University of Economics created an object from cotton fabrics with papier-mâché technique in her work called 'Love Birds' for the face-to-face exhibition that took place in Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine. The fabric was embroidered with cotton and metal thread. The work is about a couple who was locked down at home during the pandemic, communicating with each other by chatting.
MICRO WORK ALSO INCLUDED
By making a special embroidered red color on the surgical mask in her work called the 'S.O.S'., Asst. Prof. Dr. Corsini, on the other hand, conveyed both the importance of using the mask and the dangerous dimension of the period. Asst. Prof. Dr. Corsini has also prepared a micro work called 'Kırılgan (Fragile)', measuring only 5 cubic centimeters. Referring to the time spent at home during the pandemic, Asst. Prof. Dr. Corsini emphasized that life can fit into a narrow space and can be transferred to its surroundings with all its transparency. The works, which had the opportunity to take part in one of the most interesting exhibitions in Ukraine, received full marks from art enthusiasts.
A DIFFERENT EXCITEMENT
Prof. Dr. Adanır and Asst. Prof. Dr. Corsini stated that they were happy to take part in such an important international exhibition that started on June 1 and will continue until next Tuesday. Stating that artists from many countries, including South Korea, Malaysia, Spain, Argentina, took part in the exhibition, Adanır and Corsini said, “The Covid-19 pandemic, which has been in our lives for about 1.5 years, changed our social life, work routine and many habits. We also aimed to create works of art describing this period in which the whole world was affected, thus raising awareness. The works that we brought to life using textile products also attracted the attention of the exhibition organizers. Until today, our works have been accepted to exhibitions in different parts of the world. However, this exhibition, which includes our works describing the pandemic period, was a different experience and excitement for us as well.”
