Asterios Agkathidis was our guest
Asterios Agkathidis from Liverpool University was our guest within the context of ARCH 202 Architectural Design II. Agkathidis gave a seminar entitled “Design Teaching Research” on 05.03.2020 at Izmir University of Economics. Agkathidis and his one of Master students Rana Günel also conducted a workshop entitled “3D Printing on Textiles” with the second year architecture students. This workshop was an introduction to the application of parametric design tools and digital fabrication techniques in relation to materiality. It consisted of a software workshop, project tutorials, an introductory lecture, and a final presentation session. The aim was to 3D print a parametric pattern to a pre-stretched fabric in order to have a 3D geometry as the final output that were very much appreciated by the organizers, course instructors and the students.
Asterios studied architecture in Thessaloniki and the RWTH Aachen, holding a 6-year Diploma in Architecture and Engineering from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He completed his 2-year postgraduate studies in Advanced Architectural Design at the Städelschule Architecture Class in Frankfurt (2001) tutored by Peter Cook, Enric Miralles, Ben van Berkel and CJ Lim. He became a partner in the architectural practice b&k+ in Cologne until 2004, then worked for VMX Architects, Amsterdam until 2005. After being part of OMA that same year, Asterios returns to Frankfurt where he founds the architecture and research laboratory a3lab Frankfurt-Thessaloniki.
His built work has been published, awarded and exhibited internationally. Teaching and lecturing experiences include the AdBK Nuremberg, the TU Darmstadt, the University of Thessaloniki, the Islamic University Malaysia, the Columbia University, and the Städelschule Architecture Class. He was Visiting Assistant Professor at the Lebanese American University in Beirut and Senior Lecturer at the Raffles Design Institute Shanghai.
Today, being a registered architect in Greece (TEE) and the UK (ARB), he holds a senior lectureship for digital architecture at the University of Liverpool, where he is currently PGT Lead and the Programme Director of the MA in Architecture, tutoring in design studios and thesis. He is the author of numerous publications, including Modular Structures (2009), Computational Architecture (2012), and Generative Design (Laurence King, 2016).
