Children made their own new year’s gifts

Students and academics of Izmir University of Economics (IUE) attended a “Sock Doll Design Workshop” with children in Koruncukköy, Urla. 39 female students learned how to make dolls out of socks as they had both fun and got a chance to improve their creativity. The workshop, co-organized by academics and students of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design and IUE Child Development Program, contributed greatly to the development of manipulative skills of the children.
The workshop took place under the guidance of Prof. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Asst. Prof. Ebru Corsini, and Ezgi Oral, Lecturer at IUE Vocational School of Health Services, Child Development Program.
THEY USED THEIR IMAGINATION
Prof. Adanır stated that they planned easy activities such as New Year’s ornaments for children. “We showed them how to make snow man themed sock dolls. We had so much pleasure working with such a special group. Children used their imagination as they decorated their dolls. Seeing that happiness in their eyes is worth everything,” said Prof. Adanır.
THEY SAW WHAT THEY CAN ACCOMPLISH
Child Development Program Lecturer Ezgi Oral reported that the purpose of the project was to help the female children, who recently joined the institution, get socialized and to encourage their talent development. Stating that the children socialized by producing stuff, and the workshop had been very rewarding, Oral said, “Children liked the fact they were able to create their own toys. This helped them understand what they can accomplish.”
