LIGHTING, MOODS, AND EMOTIONS

This study was an attempt to investigate the ability of different configurations of lighting design to affect television audiences’ impressions towards the perceived mood and appearance of videographed models (e.g., presenters, interviewees, actors… etc.) and the whole image. The research critically appraised existing television lighting techniques resulting in identification of the basic elements of lighting design (i.e., direction, colour, and quality) that should be addressed and examined in order to answer the research questions and formulate their conclusions. In providing the needed empirical evidence for this research work, an experimental study was conducted. During the course of these experiments, direct relationships were suggested between the three elements of lighting design mentioned above and the mood of videographed models as perceived by a representative sample of television viewers. The study also demonstrated that some elements of lighting design could be more meaningful and effective than others. The research concluded that the viewers’ perception of moods and emotions within television images might be adaptive to different conditions of television lighting design. Moreover, this study provided a contribution in defining a suitable method for the elicitation and analysis of lighting design effects, showing that it would be possible to carry out research within lighting design using both qualitative and quantitative research methods
