HOW TO ADD CULTURAL ATTRIBUTES TO THE DESIGN PROCESS OF DIGITAL VIDEO LIBRARY USER INTERFACES?

Mainly, this paper is based on a design problem in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) field and is concentrated on Digital Video Libraries (DVLs). DVLs are virtual places where Video Collection(s) containing variety of digital videos are stored and the main purpose of these systems is to provide efficient and satisfactory opportunity of reaching the data. Accessing and browsing the information in a DVL is a complicated process happened in several information seeking stages. In our study, we concentrate on the process from obtaining the search results to deciding on the desired video. Choosing one of the search results, browsing the video and evaluating are three main stages of the process. Designing user interfaces for all these stages is a key issue for DVL field and new interface ideas should be brought up. Considering cultural attributes for design process is one of these features which can enrich the field.

In our paper, we discuss how we can add cultural attributes to the design process of DVLs. We formulate the main design idea of the user interfaces for the process we are involved, and propose a new approach considering possible cultural influence. For deciding on specific cultural attributes and their adaptation to the user interface design, we benefit from already completed studies of the authors. Therefore, we bring up a new design approach and conduct usability testing on group of university students from Yildiz Technical University. Test results show the rate of contribution of the cultural attributes to the design process and where cultural criteria are more significant.
