FASHIONING A NATION: SUMERBANK TEXTILE PATTERNS EXHIBITION BETWEEN 1956-2000 HAS OPENED
As a part of the project “Digital Textile Pattern Archive and Creation of a Virtual Museum” carried out with the collaboration of Izmir University of Economics Department of Fashion and Textile Design and İzmir Development Agency, an exhibition entitled “Fashioning a Nation: Sümerbank Textile Patterns Exhibition between 1956-2000” opened on November 13th,2015 at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center. Ekrem Demirtaş, President of IUE Board of Trustees; Murat Yılmazçoban, İZKA Secretary General; Sabri Ünlütürk, Director of Aegean Exporters' Union; Prof. Dr. Oğuz Esen, IUE Rector; Prof. Dr. Ender Yazgan Bulgun, Dean of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design; Prof. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of Department of Fashion and Textile Design, researchers and visitors attended to the opening ceremony.
Within the scope of this project, approximately 6000 fabric samples, donated by Sümerbank İzmir Halkapınar Textile Factory for the educational purposes, were categorized and transferred to the digital platform. In the exhibition those materials belonging to the years between 1956 and 2001 were presented to the audience in a conceptual background emphasizing the theme of nostalgia. The social and cultural background which gave direction to design were displayed on a timeline starting from 1930s when Sümerbank was founded; and in the same venue Sümerbank products including calendars and porcelain design objects were exhibited together with the original fabric catalogues and swatches. The researchers, who reproduced the original fabric patterns with the techniques of serigraphy and digital printing, applied those fabrics over the clothing patterns which were obtained from the fashion magazines of the periods. Another part of the exhibition which aroused attention was the area featuring the illustrations of Angela Burns, IUE Instructor, reflecting the spirit of Sümerbank.
