Synergizing Synergies within Metadesign
----------------------------------------------------

John Wood studied Fine Art at what is now Manchester Metropolitan University, gaining a first class honours undergraduate degree, and graduating from the university’s Institute of Advanced Studies in 1969 with an ADF(Manc). He invented a number of renewable energy systems, including one of the first solar panel regulators in the UK. In 1978 he became deputy head of Fine Art at Goldsmiths, University of London. In 2002, he co-founded the ‘Attainable Utopias’ network (http://attainable-utopias.org). He has published over a hundred documents relating to ecological aspects of design and writing practices within ethical design. His book “The Virtual Embodied” was published (Routledge) in 1998, and his forthcoming book “Designing for Micro-Utopias” is due in 2007, published by Ashgate. During 2005 he led an EPSRC/AHRC funded research project on synergy within metadesign. He is currently working with Julia Lockheart on a new journal for the Writing-PAD Network (http://www.writing-pad.ac.uk/).
