DESIGNING GARDENS FOR ALZHEIMER'S PEOPLE

The Design of an Alzheimer's Garden

Having access to a nice garden can meet so many needs for people with dementia as well as their caregivers. Good garden design is also important for people with Alzheimer's who are very restless or agitated and who like or need to walk a lot.

Aims of Garden Design for Alzheimer's

  • Provides exercise, opportunities to relieve tension, frustration and aggression.
  • Provides personal space for reflection and privacy.
  • Provides a different social environment.
  • Provides stimulation with color, smells and sounds of wildlife.

Essential conditions and provisions for Alzheimer

  • Forcing fences must be avoided
  • Direct visual control must be possible
  • A solid track for walking (such as asphalt) must be created, intervened by different types of places to rest.
  • Harmless and not-toxic aromatic plantation
  • Preference for small season-bound plantation.
  • Preference for florescence’s with catching colours.
  • Regular division of aromatic plantation along the track.
  • Arranged areas for gardening.
Potted plants at wheelchair-level should be attended in order that disabled persons are also able to smell, to feel and to garden.
